Big Beat

sounds good, feels good

about big beat

Big Beat is a 19-piece big band that was formed with one purpose - to make music that sounds good and feels good. We believe in that creed so much that we named our full-length album “Sounds Good, Feels Good” for which we raised $9,000 in a successful Kickstarter campaign. With lead vocalist Allison McKenzie singing jazz, R&B, and soul, we create a fresh big band sound.  Active since 2014, Big Beat has performed at prominent NYC/NJ venues The Knitting Factory, Shapeshifter Lab, Langosta Lounge, Seton Hall University, the Mad Liberation Festival, and William Paterson University's Summer Jazz series. Guest artist collaborations include Karryn Allison, Vanessa Rubin, Peter Bernstein, Rich Perry, Duane Eubanks, Freddie Hendrix, and the Shady Street Show Band. We make you feel the groove.  It's in your soul baby.

If you’ve got your ears peeled, eager to hear what the future of jazz sounds like, a phenomenal place to start focusing is Big Beat, a 19-piece, millennial led ensemble bent on dynamically fusing classic, bold, brassy, improvisational rich big band power with relentless grooving steeped in more contemporary R&B/soul, gospel and funk. - Johnathan Wildran, JW Vibe
